Shabbat evening  קבלת שבת

October 29 @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm PDT

Ahavat Olam Synagogue welcomes everyone to join us online via Zoom for thoughtful, moving Shabbat evening prayers on Friday Evening, October 29, 2021 at 7:30pm, mostly sung, much in Hebrew, some in English, some in the language of the heart and in the speech of the angels.

PLEASE LET US KNOW at info@ahavat-olam.ca if you wish to attend. We will get back to you with the information you’ll need to log in to the online Zoom meeting.

The weekly parshah (Torah portion) is Chaye Sarah (Genesis 23:1 – 25:18), which translates to the “Life of Sarah” but it begins with her passing and the story of how Abraham buried her. It continues with the story of how Abraham seeks out a wife for Isaac. We meet Rebecca who agrees to leave her family to become Isaacs’s wife. As she is leaving, her brother and mother give her a blessing saying “Our sister, may you become the mother of thousands of tens of thousands.” (Genesis 24:60) In this way, the portion is a tribute to the life of Sarah, who believed that she would not be able to have a child herself. Here we see that Sarah’s son Isaac will thrive and with Rebecca become the ancestors of the multitudes of our people.

[When Abraham’s servant Eliezer first meets Rebecca at the well and asks her for a sip of water, she not only serves it to him but offers to draw water for his camels as well — a major undertaking!
