Shabbat morning, January 25, 2020 תפילת שבת
Please come and join us for Shabbat morning on January 25, 2020 at 10 am at the Vancouver Peretz Centre, 6184 Ash Street, Vancouver. Everyone is most welcome.
We’ll share prayers and reflections, mingling Hebrew, English and wordless melodies with passages of silence. We’ll follow the flow of the traditional prayer service with lots of room for our own personal journeys to unfold.
If we’re a minyan, we’ll chant from our Torah scroll in Hebrew. If we are less than a minyan, we’ll read the passages out of a book. Either way, we’ll share our reflections, inspirations and questions. The weekly parshah (Torah portion) is Va’eira (Exodus 6:2 – 9:35). It includes the Eternal’s charge to Moses and Aaron that they confront Pharaoh and liberate the Children of Israel from bondage. Moses expresses doubt and reluctance; the Eternal returns certainty and preparation — and the first seven of the ten plagues upon Egypt. In these times when, as Rabbi Tarfon said, “the hour is late, and the task is great, and the workers are sluggish, and the wages are high, and the Master of the house is pressing,” it’s well to recall the accomplishment of other great tasks by unlikely agents at other key times and places.
Right after the davvening, we’ll share a veggie, potluck Kiddush lunch. This will give us all a chance to hang out together, get to know each other, catch up, enjoy the connections among us. So, please plan to stay and bring a generous, abundant dish to share. Main dishes, side dishes, drinks, desserts are all most welcome — look for suggestions and guidelines here. Ahavat Olam will provide wine and hallah.
We’ll gather in the lounge on the mail floor in the Peretz Centre, a fully accessible facility at 6184 Ash Street a block west of Cambie Street at 45th, just between the Canada Line Oakridge and Langara stations. We’ll begin at 10 a.m., finish the davvening and Torah exploration by 12:30 and make Kiddush and have lunch at about 12:45.
If you have questions, please feel free to contact us. If you like, go to Ahavat Olam’s Facebook event page, tell us that you’re coming and send an invite to your friends.
