CANCELLED: Shabbat morning, March 28, 2020 תפילת שבת
Ahavat Olam Synagogue regrets to announce that our March 28 Shabbat morning service is CANCELLED due to concerns about COVID-19. We understand that, in order to slow the spread of this disease, it’s crucial to eliminate all non-essential social contact. We will continue to monitor the situation and heed the advice of public health officials with regard to future planned services.
We invite you to review the Torah reading for that week and explore its meaning. The weekly parshah (Torah portion) is Vayikra (Leviticus 1:1 – 5:26) and it outlines the various kinds of sacrifices to be offered in the Sanctuary. A Chassidic teaching suggests that today, in place of sacrificing actual animals, we are called upon to sacrifice our “animal nature” — to sweeten our selfish impulses and direct them toward the greater good: a startlingly appropriate lesson for the times in which we find ourselves.
