The weekly parshah (Torah portion) is Ki Tisa (Exodus 30:11-34:35). Moses spends 40 days and nights on Mount Sinai learning Torah with the Eternal and receiving the Divinely carved stone tablets of the commandments. Meanwhile the Children of Israel, in an agony of fear and uncertainty, get Aaron to build them a golden calf to worship. Moses smashes the tablets in a rage — but persuades the Eternal to spare the people and give them another chance. In times of deep conflict, rage can be a natural reaction. What do we smash when we give in to it? What do we manage to spare and save? Is anger a necessary response to wrongdoing?
