Shabbat evening קבלת שבת
December 3, 2021 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm PST
Ahavat Olam Synagogue welcomes everyone to join us online via Zoom for thoughtful, moving Shabbat evening prayers on December 3, 2021 at 7:30pm, mostly sung, much in Hebrew, some in English, some in the language of the heart and in the speech of the angels.
PLEASE LET US KNOW at info@ahavat-olam.ca if you wish to attend. We will get back to you with the information you’ll need to log in to the online Zoom meeting.
This is the Shabbat in Chanukah, and we’ll share a look at each other’s chanukiahs and, for those who wish, light the candles.
The weekly parshah (Torah portion) is Miketz (Genesis 41.1 – 44:17). Lots of ups and downs. Joseph, favoured by his father, sold into slavery by his jealous brothers, elevated to second in command in his master Potiphar’s household, then falsely accused and imprisoned, is remembered and brought out to interpret Pharoah’s dreams. So astute is his understanding that he is elevated from jail to become second only to Pharoah in all Egypt; then the brothers who sold him come to buy food, and Joseph starts playing some games on them. A powerful human drama unfolds as love and anger, blame and forgiveness struggle in these complicated ancestors of ours.
[One of Pharoah’s dreams was about seven cows by the Nile. Below, courtesy of Wikimedia Commons (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cows_in_the_Nile_River_-_panoramio.jpg) and photographer Christopher Steinle (3 April 2008), are six of them.]
